Looking for easy up-dos for medium hair?
Whether it’s the sticky humidity, sweaty neck or breezy beach, there are plenty of reasons why it feels good to throw your hair in an up-do during summer weather.
This post talks about cute ways to create up-dos that are easy and work for a range of hair textures!
Messy Bun
Old Reliable, aka the messy bun, is often a go-to on day 3 of dirty hair. But by making sure your ponytail isn’t too slicked back and that you’ve pulled out face-framing tendrils, you can transform your hair from lazy-looking to effortlessly chic.
Dutch Braid Pigtails
Perfect for a day at the pool (no poke in the back of your head as you lay out!), Dutch braids are cute and fun. And, once you get the hang of the “reverse French braid,” they’re actually pretty easy!
A Beautiful Mess gives a great step-by-step tutorial:
Side Braid Into a Pony or Bun
The trick here is to not worry if it’s too perfect. The messier, the better! Braids look better when they’re a little bit lived in. Don’t overthink it!
Braided Top Knot
Add a little oomph to your everyday bun by braiding it before you wrap. Once it’s secured in the bun position, delicately pull pieces of the braid between your index fingers to widen out the chunks of hair. That will help it look fuller!
These bobby pins and mini hair elastics are my go-to for these up-do hairstyles. And wouldn’t these geometric bobby pins be so cute to throw in and jazz up a messy bun!?!
Throw in a Scarf
There’s nothing that takes dirty hair from drab to fab like a scarf. This look is definitely back in style — not that it can ever really go away.
(I mean, if girls in the 1950s did it AND girls in 2020 do it, you know it is pretty timeless).
Same idea here from Fab Mood, but just pop it around your messy bun for a little extra somethin’ somethin’.
Or, take your scarf and just kind of … weave it in there.
Even half-up looks great with a scarf.

Love the artsy look of this one!
And here are some cute gold-plated hoops that look super cute with a hair scarf.
These are 18K gold-plated hoops and have great ratings! Personally, if I want to wear earrings for more than about an hour I have to have the REAL thing. But gold plated is a great way for me to wear trendier items I don’t want to have to spend a fortune on! They typically last me a good two years before the gold starts rubbing off. AND, they’re only about $14!!
And here are some similar ones, a little chunkier and 14K gold plated:
Easy Elegant Chignon
I never DON’T feel like Lily Van Der Woodsen from the show Gossip Girl when I wear my hair like this. It looks super chic, but really doesn’t take much effort at all.
Caveat: Not the easiest if you have super layered short hair. Otherwise, ideal for throwing up for a dinner out or a summer evening party!
